Where's MY Book? A Guide for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth, Their Parents, & Everyone Else took a gold medal in the Global EBook Awards, announced this evening. The gold medal was awarded in the category of LGBT Non-Fiction.

Where's MY Book? won the 2016 AASECT Book Award (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, & Therapists), announced in June. 

It was also honored as an Eric Hoffer Award Winner in the category of Health, and took two silver medals in the Benjamin Franklin Book Awards in the LGBT and Teen Non-Fiction categories.

Where's MY Book? and The Teaching Transgender Toolkit Win AASECT 2016 Book Award

Two resources focusing on transgender health shared the 2016 Book Award announced at the Conference of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, & Therapists held last week in Puerto Rico.

"'Where's MY Book?' A Guide for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth, Their Parents & Everyone Else" was written by Linda Gromko, MD. The Seattle family physician has worked with the transgender community for 18 years. Gromko's book has also won the Eric Hoffer Award in the category of Health, and two silver metals in the Benjamin Franklin Awards, in the categories of LGBT and Teen Non-Fiction.

Sharing the honor was "The Teaching Transgender Toolkit: A Facilitator's Guide to Increasing Knowledge, Decreasing Prejudice, and Building Skills," by Eli Green PhD, CSE and Luca Maurer, CSE, CSC, CSES.

The US Review of Books acknowledged the book as follows:

A Guide for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth, Their Parents, & Everyone Else" won two Silver Medals in the Independent Book Publishers Association's Benjamin Franklin Award Ceremony on April 8, 2016. The book was honored in the categories of LGBT and Teen Non-Fiction.

This year's competition drew 1400 entrees in 54 categories. The IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards are considered among the most prestigious honors in the independent publishing sector.

"Where's MY Book?" is independently published by Bainbridge Books, a division of Queen Anne Medical Associates, PLLC. The book is sold on Amazon.com, at the medical practice location, and at Dr.Gromko's speaking engagements.

Where's MY Book? A Guide for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth, Their Parents, & Everyone Else has been named a finalist in the 28th Annual Benjamin Franklin Book Awards Competition held by the Independent Book Publishers Association. The book was honored in the category of Teen Non-Fiction.

 

The national competition honors authors in fifty categories. It  is considered one of the highest awards in independent publishing.

 

Awards will be announced April 8 at the IBPA's Publishing University in Salt Lake City, Utah.

 

Why is this important to me? It's a great honor for an independent author! But more importantly, this helps to call attention to the important issues faced by transgender youth.

Queen Anne Medical's Dental and Scrotal Anesthesia Makes Electrolysis/Laser Easier for our Transgender Clients

My family medical practice, Queen Anne Medical Associates, PLLC, has served the transgender community for eighteen years. We added laser and electrolysis for hair removal over the last two years.

Of course individuals vary in how they experience these treatments. But particularly for the sensitive upper lip area, these treatments can be painful. That's why we routinely offer prescription-strength numbing medicine at no additional cost. For a moderate fee, I can do a mean dental block - or a scrotal block prior to gender confirmation surgery. Needless to say, these have become fairly popular!

It reminds me of taking childbirth classes when I was pregnant nearly forty years ago. "Think of contractions as 'pressure'" didn't ring true in my experience.

I believe that offering reasonable pain relief for hair removal procedures is critical. But I have found that most clinics do not offer pain relief for laser and/or electrolysis. I don't want painful hair removal to be just another "punishment" or burden one carries just for being trans!
