<span style="font-family: "arial";">TDOR events to be held all over the world remind us of the violence directed at trans people. I've worked as a physician providing transgender care and primary care to individuals in the trans community for just under 20 years now. My transgender patients range from age 5 to 83. The violence directed at community members weighs heavily on all of us. Violence includes physical and verbal assault, with murder at the extreme.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">But we also experience the heartbreak of suicide. The transgender community reports a suicide attempt rate of nearly 50 percent - a higher suicide attempt rate than in any other population. This is true in adolescents and adults.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The suicide of a seventeen-year-old patient prompted me to write 'Where's MY Book?'

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We explore suicide risks, warning signals, and how to access help when a person's thoughts become so dark that suicide becomes a real consideration. <span style="font-family: "arial";">Numbers of suicide hotlines for teens, adults, and parents are listed.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">I tell the story of a wonderful trans patient of mine who thinks about suicide so often, I've stopped asking her if she's suicidal. Rather, I ask her, "What do you do when you think about taking your own life?" Her immediate answer, "Anything else!" gave me a tool to use with other patients. We explore in practical terms what specific things one can do to get to the next minute, the next day.

I have a University of Washington education: a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master's in Nursing, my MD degree, and my family practice residency all through the University of Washington!

But through all of that training, I scarcely heard a word about transgender health! Having done transgender medicine for 18 years and having written a book about it (Where's MY Book? A Guide for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth, Their Parents, & Everyone Else), it's important to me. Seattle is said to have the third largest transgender population in the US.

That's why it feels so great to participate for the third year in the UW School of Medicine's elective course on transgender medicine. Coordinated by Roberta Dalley, MD, and Gender Justice League Executive Director Dani Askini, the course is attended by primarily medical students. There are some folks from social work, public health, and perhaps nursing also.

Someday, this course - or parts of it - must be offered in the general curriculum of the UW School of Medicine. I sold a bunch of books, and raffled off three. Our drawing winners were two enthusiastic trans youth, and Jeanette from GenderMystic (whose help in using the "Square" device for high tech commerce was enormously appreciated!). Thanks also to leader Carol Caravana.
Reviews mean a lot in promoting any book, and I am grateful.

We all know how important this book is: whether it's a puberty book for a young teen or the puberty book you never had, this book will provide a great deal of information. And information saves lives!
Writing Where's MY Book? A Guide for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth, Their Parents & Everyone Else has been a labor of love.

Having worked with transgender clients for almost eighteen years, I have long recognized the need for credible information - particularly for young people. But even for people who've already transitioned years ago, this is the puberty book you never had!

This book is enormously enhanced by the artwork of Jacqui Beck - many of the paintings in this book come from her Gender Personal Exhibit (www.JacquiBeck.com).

One of my favorite paintings of Seattle artist,
Jacqui Beck: "Forget the Glass Slipper"

I rated the book "R for Realistic." We use real words, and show real anatomic illustrations. Too much realism? I don't think so. The people I treat have already been all over the Internet!

The book will be available shortly on Amazon.com, and in e-Book formats through Kindle and Nook.

Take care,
